Episode Breakdown

What is a Logo?

The official definition of a logo is a symbol or design adopted by an organization to identify its products or services. It is a visual representation of your product, your company, or your brand. Originally, logos were meant to showcase artistic expression but over time, evolved to include a brand's identity. Logos now serve as a way to build brand awareness and customer loyalty through consistent use across various social media platforms and marketing opportunities. Many toy companies, such as Mattel and Hasbro, have gained brand awareness through their unique logos. Read on to discover the characteristics of good logos for toy companies as well as what makes a logo a bad logo.

Good Logos

Several characteristics are important to keep in mind to create a good toy company logo. Logos should be

  1. Easy to Read and Understand: Even at a distance, your toy company's logo should be readable to passing consumers as well as understandable. It needs to showcase what your product is or what your company does.

  2. Unique: Your toy company logo needs to be distinct from other logos across the market to stand out to your target audience. This does not necessarily mean all of your fonts and colors should be different, just distinguishable through other means, such as shapes and font styles.

  3. Work in Black and White: Your logo should be able to stand out even if it is recolored in two to three ways. You should have a main logo in full colors, a secondary logo with just two or three colors, and a third logo in black and white. This last bit is important as it creates opportunities to add your toy company's logo to places such as toy molds.

  4. Fit Your Brand Aesthetic: Your logo needs to match the brand it is representing. A good logo embodies the spirit of your brand and echoes the goals of your brand.

  5. Ability to Evolve: Your toy company's logo needs to be created with the thought in mind that graphic styles can change over time, and thus, your logo needs to be able to evolve with the ever-changing world, while still keeping your brand identity and recognition.

Bad Logos

There is one main thing to look out for to prevent your toy company's logo from being deemed a bad logo and that is a lack of readability. If your logo is hard to read due to poor color choices or fancy fonts, it may be an indicator that you need to revise your decisions. Bad logos also tend to be too detailed and generic, not holding much weight on their own in the eyes of consumers. Bad logos are also designed without keeping in mind all the different variations and use cases.

Conclusion

As your brand identity becomes clearer, you'll be able to design a logo that represents you, your toy company, and your mission properly. Rather than rushing and creating the next prettiest thing, take your time to develop your brand identity with a good placeholder logo and later, develop one that you feel best showcases the allure of your brand.
